The maltreatment of Nigerian Students

By Bilyaminu Gambo Kong-kol Nigeria, as they say, is our motherland. However, the mother, despite being the richest in Africa and most populous black nation in the world, has not been treating its students fairly. Taking education as an example, Nigeria has done not done much in fighting illiteracy. And less privileged Nigerians are always the victims of the neglect our schools are facing. It is a known fact that a greater percentage of the children of the poor study in primary and secondary schools that are poorly funded, weakened infrastructure, insufficient study materials and shortage of teachers. After undergoing the aforementioned challenges, the children of the poor still find it difficult to gain admission into tertiary institutions. It is irritating that some aspirants do seek admission for five to seven times before gaining it. This is not because they are not qualified but due to the limited number of universities we have in Nigeria and godfatherism that mar the system. Afte...

PEACE AS A DEVELOPMENT PREREQUISITE: GOV_ BALA CHAMPIONS THE COURSE

Image
By Muhammad Khalid Idris Bauchi state entirely has been, and is still a peaceful state among its counterparts - either you live as a stranger, or it is your origin, you might be a living witness to the fact that the state has survived numerous attempts of peace, property and innocent people's lives destabilisation through political thuggery and ethnoreligious chauvinism in the past. Such violent developments mostly started within Bauchi - some were even started within the Bauchi metropolis, and later spread to other northeastern States, like Boko Haram, which if not for the divine intervention, it could have been the state's nightmare. When his Excellency Senator Bala Abdulkadir Muhammed came onboard, political games were played against him in respect to such scenarios in the state by painting him as a person whose political ideology would promote such atrocities, it was the conclusion of many of us before the governor assumed office, but stance mostly changes when ...

What Fintiri Must Understand

Image
By Bilyaminu Gambo Kong-kol The Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri is one of the luckiest politicians in the state. He had the privilege to, within the shortest period, rise from being an ordinary member of the State House of Assembly to Speaker of the same house, Acting Governor in 2014 and first person to unseat an incumbent Governor at the polls in Adamawa State. These successes would not have been achieved if not because of the reputation he has been building for over a decade, especially while in office as the Acting Governor. However, the recent breaking of the state's warehouse, agencies, offices, schools and private companies has brought new topics of discussion in the state. First, I would like to condemn the dastardly act by the hoodlums and commend the governor for coming up with a brilliant strategy that led to the recovery of some looted properties. Notwithstanding, the threat by the governor on the citizens that any house found with looted pro...

By Abdullahi Rufa'i Adamu  The right to dignity of a human is one of the fundamental human rights of every Nigerian citizen. This right is inalienable to every Nigerian. Therefore, one should not deprive another person of this right as it is entitled by the Constitution.  A citizen of Nigeria is expected to enjoy this right without fear of any other person or government because of the legal entitlement. Violation of this right by other individual or government can lead to a disturbance of the citizen and consequently result in misunderstanding or even conflict.  There were protests recently by some of the youths agitating in many parts of the country. The Special Anti Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police (SARS) was accused by the protesters for brutal treatment and detention as described by one of the youth who appeared before the committee set up in Lagos state on how SARS detained him for forty-three days without being arraigned at the court, torturing of all...
